Chronic Absenteeism Intervention Gaps Report

Panorama Student Success offers several reports centered on absenteeism, which are available on the left-hand menu at the school level view or above. This article is about the Chronic Absenteeism Intervention Gaps Report, previously called the Attendance needs by intervention status report. To learn about other absenteeism reports, visit: Overview of Attendance Reports Available in Student Success

Attendance/Absenteeism reports in Student Success are not directly related to the Chronic Absenteeism calculations that are part of the Iowa School Performance Profile. These reports are simply tools intended to help leaders track and respond to attendance needs, which will impact the outcomes in the ISPP calculations at the end of the year.

About the Chronic Absenteeism Intervention Gaps Report

In the Chronic Absenteeism Intervention Gaps report, you can see which students have attendance needs and the proportion of those students with or without an attendance intervention plan. The report identifies which students are currently missing 10% or more of their enrolled school days, along with the proportion of those students that are, or are not, receiving an attendance intervention. They will be displayed at their own school under the school level view or across the district with district level access.

Where is the attendance data from?

It’s important to understand that the data driving these reports comes from the raw daily attendance data as entered in the student information system. It is intended as a tool for looking at potential attendance issues and is not directly connected to any other attendance reporting or accountability. Because this is based on raw, next day data, the data reported may not match up exactly with other data summaries.

When looking at the district view, for those with district-level access, the report will display the list of schools. Clicking on a school in the table below the graph generates a list of all students in that school (via the Chronically absent students report) with attendance needs. Attendance needs is defined as missing more than 10% of the time they have been enrolled in school this school year.

District Level: View By > School is the default

Building Level: View By > Grade is the default

Within the list of students, you can select the column headers to sort and click the Actions button to create an intervention.

Filters and View By

Use the View By options and Filters on the left side of the report to explore the data in various ways. The visual displayed below is set to View By > IEP, for example. Use these views alone and in conjunction with filters to explore patterns in the data that might lead to new insights on attendance barriers.

Using the report for decision-making

This report helps identify which students with absenteeism trends (missed 10% or more of their enrolled school days) have, or do not have, an attendance intervention currently. Research shows that chronic absenteeism correlates with negative outcomes for students, making identification of the gaps in support and addressing attendance barriers important to the student’s overall success. While the need to improve attendance is clear, without data to understand trends and monitor student attendance, educators cannot effectively employ chronic absenteeism interventions
